PIGEONS

After 1875: fewer Indians than whites in the Black Hills.

Miners' lungs filled with nuggets as they slept,

gold hearts pumped dust into their dreams;

childhood trees shone

with gold leaves raked into the vaults of autumn, gold dogs hunted

gold deer, synesthetic church bells showered gold notes

on village & city squares until a flash of wings

& specks of pyrite in the pan.
